Becoming a Mentee
WUN offers free mentoring to women at every stage of their career in the utilities sector.
Our WUN mentors bring a wealth of skills, knowledge and experience from across the sector — from senior leaders to near peers who may simply be one step ahead of you.
Mentoring is centred on continuous improvement and is all about you building a relationship with someone.
The mentor/mentee relationship is around helping the mentee develop and build on where they are, where they want to be, or to help with specific personal development needs.
Why have a mentor?
Having a mentor can be a powerful way to support your career and professional development. Mentoring provides an opportunity to learn from someone with different experiences, gain new perspectives and build your confidence.
Mentoring can help you:
- Develop new skills and capabilities
- Build professional relationships and networks
- Increase self-awareness and confidence
- Identify areas for personal and career development
- Explore challenges and find new ways to solve problems
- Gain a fresh perspective when making career decisions
- Support your ongoing personal and professional growt
Our Mentoring Platform allows you to upload your profile and find the right Mentor for you.
Why is mentoring beneficial?
Mentoring should be a mutually beneficial relationship where both the mentor and mentee expand their knowledge.
For example, a younger mentee just starting their career may bring a great deal of knowledge to a seasoned mentor of new trends and challenges in the current professional landscape, and how to motivate younger employees.

Blog: How mentoring can help with Imposter Syndrome.
Have you ever achieved something important, only to hear a little voice in your head whisper, “you just got lucky” or “they’ll soon realise you don’t really know what you’re doing”? If so, you are not alone, so much so, that it has a name: imposter syndrome. In academic research it is called the impostor phenomenon, and it describes the experience of doubting your abilities despite clear evidence that you are capable, skilled and deserving of your success.
It can show up in all sorts of ways. You might brush off positive feedback, over-prepare for meetings, compare yourself unfavourably with others, avoid putting yourself forward, or worry that one mistake will expose you. From the outside, you may look calm and competent. On the inside, it can feel like you are paddling furiously beneath the surface, hoping no one notices……
