Participants will be invited to challenge the social perception around self-promotion. This workshop is open to everyone.

Top tips before applying for a role

  • Take the time to read the job description & person specification for any role you are applying for.
  • Is this the right job for you? – have you the skills, qualities & work experience they are seeking – make sure you highlight them. Remember employers aren’t necessarily looking for the complete article but don’t waste your time or theirs if you aren’t qualified for a role.
  • Is the company right for you? – in terms of location, size , ethos ? Make sure you do your research before you apply.
  • Make sure your CV is up to date including your contact details & your latest role and responsibilities. Don’t forget any recent professional training & achievements.
  • Don’t simply attach a generic CV make sure you highlight relevant skills to the role you are applying for. Use examples where you have achieved commercial success, met project deadlines or overcome specific challenges.
  • Make sure that you match your skills and achievements with the job description and the skills that are required.
  • There are many CV templates you can use but make sure you stand out from the crowd. Keep it simple in terms of layout, font, language & avoid cliches and too many acronyms.
  • Always make sure you accurately reflect your professional skills & don’t forget many employees are interested in you as a person & your interests outside out of work often reveal a little more about your character & personality.
  • Don’t forget to be clear whether your referees can be approached & out of curtesy don’t forget to warn your referees that you are applying for the role & that they are happy to give you a reference.
  • Make sure you read through your CV & any covering letter for spelling or grammatical errors. Even better if you can get a friend or family member to read it as they often spot mistakes or omissions you may have forgotten to include.
