The transformational impact of the WUN mentoring programme.

Blog

The WUN free mentoring programme goes from strength to strength with over 320 mentees & 140 mentors . In this latest blog hear from a WUN mentee & mentor & why they would recommend the WUN mentoring programme to Utilities colleagues.

Margret Mwanza, British Water  talks about the transformational impact it has on her career & her gratitude to her WUN mentor, Fiona Tremlett, MWH treatment for sharing her expertise & supported her not just professionally but as a “whole person”.

I have been so impressed with the WUN Mentoring Program and I would highly recommend it to friends and colleagues working in utilities. The Program is a truly empowering initiative that pairs you with mentors who genuinely care about your development and help you unlock your potential. Being mentored by Fiona Tremlett over the past seven months has transformed the way I approach and address challenges in my career. This is particularly in building self-assurance, embracing my capabilities, overcoming doubts, and effectively highlighting my achievements.

One of the most impactful lessons I have learned from her is how to truly value my contributions. I used to downplay my work, often saying things like “I just did this,” but Fiona helped me see how those small habits were diminishing the effort and skill I bring to the table. That simple shift has completely changed how I view myself and how I communicate my achievements.

Fiona has also helped me tackle self-doubt in practical ways. Journaling, for instance, has become such a powerful tool for me. By writing down my wins and progress, I have created a positive feedback loop that reminds me of what I am capable of, even when I feel uncertain. Fiona encouraged me to focus on what is going well rather than dwelling on what didn’t, and that mindset shift has been so freeing.

What I appreciate most about Fiona is how she has supported me as a whole person, not just a professional. She has helped me find balance by prioritizing my personal goals alongside work and reminded me to celebrate small wins. Her advice to see challenges as learning opportunities has given me a fresh perspective on stepping out of my comfort zone, whether it is volunteering, networking, or embracing new responsibilities.

I am delighted to continue participating in the program and to engage in more of the WUN initiatives that foster connection, growth, and support within the community of women in utilities.

Fiona shares why she enjoys mentoring WUN members & how invaluable it is to women in “fostering connections” & why she continues to support mentees such as Margret.

Participating in the WUN Mentoring Program as a mentor has been an incredibly rewarding experience, and I have been truly inspired by Margret Mwanza’s dedication, growth, and willingness to embrace new challenges. Over the past months, I have seen Margret develop greater confidence in her abilities, challenge self-doubt, and step into new opportunities with a strong sense of purpose.

One of the things I admire most about Margret is her openness to learning and her commitment to personal and professional growth. She has taken on feedback with enthusiasm, applied new strategies with determination, and continuously pushed herself outside her comfort zone. Whether it’s finding her voice in professional settings, celebrating achievements without hesitation, or reframing challenges as learning opportunities, her progress has been remarkable.

Our monthly sessions are always productive, with Margret coming prepared to reflect on her achievements and set new goals. Her drive and determination not only propel her forward but also serve as a great reminder for me to reflect on my own learning from when I was a mentee in the WUN Mentoring Program. Seeing her growth over the past six months has been truly inspiring, and it’s clear she is committed to learning, evolving, and achieving her goals.

It is a privilege to support Margret on this journey, and I have no doubt she will continue to thrive and inspire those around her. The WUN Mentoring Program truly fosters invaluable connections, and I’m grateful to be a part of it.
