Teamwork, resilience, and trust – empowering women.

Wow — what an amazing Women’s Rugby World Cup we’ve had!

I was lucky enough to play a very tiny part in it as a flag bearer at Sandy Park, Exeter and what an experience it was.

The whole tournament has been incredible from start to finish. The standard of rugby, the energy in the stadiums, and the passion from the fans showed just how far the women’s game has come. The UK did a fantastic job of hosting, creating an atmosphere that not only celebrated world-class sport but also inspired so many people to feel part of it.

For me personally, it was a reminder that stepping outside of your comfort zone can be both rewarding and empowering.

Watching England lift the World Cup made it even more special. Their victory was built on teamwork, resilience, and trust the same qualities that underpin success in any field. In the energy world, particularly in battery storage and decarbonisation, we see the same truth every day: no project is achieved by one person or one company alone. It takes collaboration between developers, operators, optimisers, engineers, and communities, all pulling together towards the shared goal of a cleaner, more secure energy future.

As USA player Ilona Maher so brilliantly put it: “When women’s sports win, we all win. Because every win creates more space for the next generation to step into.”

That message resonates strongly with me through my work with the Womens Utilities Network (WUN). Just as every win on the pitch opens doors for future players, every step we take to empower women in energy creates more space for others to follow ensuring the next generation has the confidence and opportunity to succeed.

For me, the experience reinforced the lesson that while I may not always take myself too seriously, I can rise to the occasion when it matters and that the best results, whether on the pitch, in business, or in powering the grid, come when we work as a team.

It was a privilege to play even a small part in an event that will continue to inspire the next generation. 🙌

What’s the best example of teamwork you’ve experienced recently.
