What is WUN?
WUN – Womens Utilities Network – was started to give women the skills and confidence they need to build lasting, fulfilling careers in the utility sector. Founded by a group of women who have themselves built successful careers in both energy and water, WUN seeks to help other women to build the right networks, get the right training and take control of their own work lives at whichever stage of their career they are at.
WUN is open to anyone working in the utilities space, whatever their chosen career path or level of experience and seniority. The purpose is to create a network of support to help all women develop their skills and career within the sector.
WUN runs events to connect women together and offers mentoring for those looking to build their careers and learn from others who have already built successful careers in the sector.
The Role
We are looking for a WUN Director that will work as part of the Board and wider team to develop the strategy, guide the running and proactively raise awareness of the WUN network. They, by the nature of the role, advocate for WUN and take opportunities in their day to day role as well as formally arranged opportunities to promote WUN to partners and members.
The successful applicate will be appointed as directors of WUN and will assume the associated legal and fiduciary obligations.
WUN will have a maximum of 8 Board Members at any one time. Formal Board meetings are held quarterly, face to face, in London and are supplemented by monthly catch up calls. The meetings will be chaired by the appointed Chair. The minutes will be recorded and shared.
Each board member can serve a term of 3 years and then, if desired, request to stay for another 3 years. The second term is to be requested / applied for to the Chair of the Board and supported by the WUN Board / Founders.
The role is unremunerated. Reasonable expenses incurred directly on behalf of WUN will be reimbursed.
Activities
- Provide strategic guidance and oversight for WUN and ensure alignment of activities with its mission and strategic goals
- Utilise network and sector knowledge and insight to support and promote the network’s initiatives and events
- Connecting with and managing the relationships with our partner organisations
- Represent the network at events, online and where opportunity allows
- Be a ‘go to person’ within your organisation for WUN and D&I thinking
- Attend monthly virtual meetings and quarterly in-person board meeting, pre-reading papers etc.
Skills
- Be a senior figure working in or with experience in the utilities sector that can bring influence and value to the network
- A passion for driving the mission and values of WUN in the utilities community
- Have previous Board experience or demonstrable knowledge of Directors’ duties and Board governance
- Have capacity and willingness to lead and support WUN projects and initiatives
- Strong influencing and leaderships skills
- Bring a leadership skillset or knowledge base to the network
- Commit around 10 hours per month to lead and support WUN initiatives
- Be willing to sign up as a mentor on the WUN mentoring platform.
How much time will the role take?
As this role is voluntary, Board Members should be prepared to give around 10 hours per month as a minimum, but there are no firm expectations on commitment or a time limit. If a Board Member is inactive for a continued period, they may be asked to stand down so that a new Board Member may be recruited.
